The Story: Joseph–From Slave to Deputy Pharaoh

The Story

God has a way of using the strangest of situations to fulfill his plans. When God plans something it is always brought to pass. The story of Joseph is one that should encourage us when we are in a situation that appears hopeless. When we are down and feel so alone, thinking of what Joseph accomplished via the power of God should bring us out of it.

This story is more than a story about one person, it is the story ofr an entire nation, the future people of Israel.

Family Troubles

Despite the facet that polygamy was part of this family, God used them anyway. These people did not honor God’s original intention for marriage and he used them anyway. However, sin has its consequences. Polygamy brought strong tension between the wives and this tension often passed on to the children. In Genesis 37 we see the effects of this tension.

Into Egypt

Egypt was the ruling power at the time. Egypt controlled everything.  Joseph was sold as a slave, but became a great leader.

True Dreams

Dreams were taken very seriously during this time period. Dreams often changed the course of an entire nation.

A Dream Fulfilled

When Joseph emerged from imprisonment it was his interpretation of other people’s dreams that lead him to greatness. His faithfulness coupled with God working through him to interpret dreams gained him the favor of the Pharaoh. Pharaoh knew he could trust Joseph completely. As a result he put Joseph in charge of many things. Joseph became second in command to the Pharaoh.

Famine

Due to a famine in the area, Joseph’s brothers came face to face with him again, but did not realize it was him. Joseph could have plotted revenge for them selling him into slavery, but instead, Joseph brought the family together and saved them from the famine.  Joseph’s belief that God was in charge freed him to forgive his brothers and was the key to understanding God’s greater plan for the family of Abraham.
